”Homegrown Hate” – author talk with Sara Kamali

”Homegrown Hate” – online author event with Sara Kamali

ONLINE | Wednesday 5th May at 19:00 Free

Who are the American citizens – White nationalists and militant Islamists – perpetrating acts of terrorism against their own country? What are their grievances and why do they hate? How can this transnational peril be effectively addressed?

To better understand current events and threats, Sara Kamali outlines in her book Homegrown Hate the organizations and beliefs of domestic terrorists in the US and how to counter their attacks on democracy.

Meet author Sara Kamali online on May 5th in conversation with journalist Leonidas Aretakis to discuss these issues. Order personally signed books at the event.

Harry Potter Book Night 2021

Harry Potter Book Night Thursday 4 February 2021

ONLINE | Thursday 4th Feb at 19.00

Welcome to Diagon Alley – now featuring The English Bookshop!

Due to the pandemic, the publisher has postponed the official Harry Potter Book Night celebrations until June 24th. Well, for us in Sweden that’s the day before Midsummer... And we’re not letting a pandemic stop us from celebrating Harry Potter on the ”right” day, right? So this year we'll do an online version instead, and we do have something special waiting for you:

A live talk by founder of Uppsala Slug Club Karolina Andersdotter about Harry Potter in Seven Languages: a linguistic odyssey through known and unknown languages, followed by a Q&A and (technology willing) a short online quiz.

Holiday Hours at the shops

in

Welcome in through the shop doors, Santa

It’s easier to come in through the door, Santa... And we keep longer shop hours until Christmas to make it easier for both you and Santa to visit.

For everyone’s safety & comfort, we do ask you to help us limit the number of customers in the shop at one time. Too many in the shop? Please have a (distanced) seat in the chairs outside and have a rest until someone leaves.

If you can’t visit the shop, do contact us so we can assist you remotely instead. Email the shop or send a message on facebook messenger:

Xmas Crime Pack

’Tis the time season to find whodunnit…

Xmas Crime Pack

There was so much call for our handpicked Advent Calendars earlier this month that we decided to do one more special for Christmas!

We have 42 packs of classic cosy Christmas Crime Reading – 2 books in each package along with a 50 g bag of exquisite tea from our friends at Tehörnan – all wrapped up and ready.

(If you were one of the people who bought the Crime Advent Calendar earlier this might not be for you since there could be some overlapping. Makes an awfully nice gift though!)

These packs are priced at 350:- (plus postage if you want them sent to yourself or gift it to someone else) and the contents are a surprise (all picked by Stina!) so you can treat yourself or a friend with this succulent and seasonal parcel.

Mind you – we only have 42 packs – so get your orders in swiftly!

Tips for a Safe & Merry Slow Christmas

in

Let’s have ourselves a Safe and Merry Slow Christmas

Here’s what we’re doing to make this a Safe & Slow Christmas!
(Perhaps with even more time for reading...)

SAFE BROWSING in the shops:

  • COME BY when the shop is less busy to avoid crowding. (Google Maps’ feature ”Popular Times” can help you plan your shop visits, to us and to other shops.)
  • NO NEED TO RUSH. Let’s make this a Safe and Uncrowded Slow Christmas. For everyone’s safety and comfort, we limit the number of customers in the shop at the same time.
  • PROTECTIVE SCREEN at the cashier’s desk.
  • HAND SANITIZERS by the entrance and the cashier (help yourself and help protect each other).
  • REMINDERS in place to remind us all to keep a caring distance and to keep carrying on!
  • SANTA GOT IT WRONG? If the gift recipient doesn’t love your gift, you can exchange it all the way to Valentine’s Day! (Please don’t write Happy Xmas Bobby in it, make sure it’s in good nick and save the receipt.)
  • LAST DAY for special orders: from the US by Lucia, and from the UK by Dec 16th.

WE’LL MAKE IT EASY for you:

  • WANT HELP TO SHOP for dad/aunt/niece/johan/laura/your rugby team? We can and will help. Contact us with your requirements and we will help you chose the perfect bookish gift!
  • SEND DIRECTLY to the gift recipient? We sure can do, and we’ll gift wrap it for you and send any greeting along with it.
  • WRAP IT UP! We can wrap your orders up for you, ready to be picked up or sent to you or a gift receiver (with your greeting).
  • GIFT VOUCHERS have always been a gift of choice. This year it’s also a sign of caring & safety. » www.bookshop.se/giftvouchers
  • A BOOK CLUB subscription is the gift that keeps on giving – a surprise every month for a quarter, half a year, or an entire year! For yourself or a loved one. » www.bookshop.se/bookclub
  • QUICK PICK-UP at the shop with Swish pre-payment (as fast as the swishing sound...)
  • SIDEWALK DELIVERY of orders (just let us know).
  • BOOKBIKE delivery if you are self-isolating (and live nearby the Uppsala shop).

WE’RE JUST A MESSAGE AWAY!

  • CAN’T VISIT? Just get in touch for recommendations, to order or reserve books, for mailorder delivery or pick-up. Email or send a facebook message and we’ll help you out.
